A typical day starts at the studio with a drawing session from observation, a demonstration of technique followed by a slide show presentation of a specific art or architectural project, topic or history. The group then embarks on a field trip to draw and paint outdoors in Central park, Battery Park City Marina or Hudson River Park. Explore, sketch and study historical buildings and structures like the Brooklyn Bridge or St. John the Divine Cathedral. Our trips include visits to museums and sculpture parks like MOMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Art and Design, The Cooper Hewitt, Museum of Moving Image, Isamu Noguchi Studio and more!
Back in the studio, students continue to develop and/or complete their independent projects. Projects are executed with a balance of independent working and close mentoring. Materials and processes include working with water based paints, intaglio printmaking, monoprinting, clay, plaster casting, origami, wire sculpting, airbrushing, cyanotype and more. At the end of the program students bring home a substantial portfolio along with a sketchbook and disposable camera pictures detailing their summer adventure!
