Intro to Oil Painting:
Discover your creative self through painting and drawing
 
January 10 - February 14, 2012
Tuesdays, 6 sessions;10:00 am to 12:30 pm
Tuition: $ 360

This introductory course will cover the basic topics of oil painting while also reviewing drawing fundamentals. The student will explore painting materials, the palette, basic color theory and color mixing, the interaction of visual elements, and various approaches to painting.

The drawing review will address topics such as materials, shape and the structure of objects, proportion, light and shade, values and tones, and composition.

By the end of this course, the student should feel comfortable handling painting and drawing materials and techniques.

 
Bring to first class:

Vine charcoal, 2B and B pencils, kneaded eraser, and 18" x 24" newsprint pad.

One small can of Turpenoid or odorless turpentine, one paper palette pad, one small jar, several oil painting brushes (#2 round, #6, #8, #10, flat, bright, round), and one canvas or prepared board (14"X18").

One 37ml tube of the following colors: Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Alizarin Crimson, Thalo Blue, and Ultramarine Blue. One 200ml Titanium White.

Using the fundamentals of oil painitng, the student will explore color, form, and content. Subjects will include still life, the model and personal topics. This course encourage the student's individual developement, and through the newly acquired/honed technical skills enhance personal expression.

The class will discuss basic color theory and color mixing, the interaction of visual elements, and various approaches to painting. The course will revisit drawing proportion and composition.
